I think this pic is from 1998 or 1999 backstage at the show I produced at Lincoln Center. Phyllis was our headliner with Joy Behar and Jeanane Garofalo, the beautiful Beverly D'Angelo hosted.
Phyllis Diller was a trail blazer, I love a trail blazer, I love a woman who doesn't stay in the kitchen, who finds her calling later in life (she didn't start her comedy career until her late 30's), she was an artist, a painter, a concert pianist and of course a comedian.
Thank you for your genius Ms Diller. What an honor to work with you twice!

Today my rage against the city of Detroit was EPIC! You may have sadly had to deal w my rage in your Facebook feed...sorry.
Seriously Detroit, I know I'm a cranky beeoch before my lady friend arrives, but what's going on??
You have such potential to be a good city again (I say good because great would be pushing it).
There are a good amount of students, hipsters, artists, business people, creative entrepreneur types living & hanging downtown....What's going on?
What's up with the inability of most Detroiters to not be able to return a call, email or text?
Are you just that busy??
Come on, I've been here for a few months and there are some charming elements to this phoenix of a city, but you have to FOLLOW UP on things people.
Cities don't just build themselves, emails don't just answer themselves, businesses have to be managed, ideas followed through with, its embarrassing what's happening here.
Just look at Twitter accounts and posts. Do a little research, you'll find all of these supposedly great Twitter accounts with incredible things happening in Detroit that....Haven't posted in 200+ days? I know there are at least one or two things to do every night in downtown Detroit and there are two or three really wonderful organizations/people that keep people abreast of the happenings in the city but they can't do everything!
Don't even get me started on looking for an apartment downtown. It's ridiculous. These real estate people should have their licenses pulled. Who do they think they are kidding, you either pay dirt cheap rent and chance your safety or pay almost LA/NYC rents for luxury buildings in areas where the crime is higher because they surround the stadiums. Figure this shit out Detroit.
(here is a hint, NYers aren't gonna come here if they pay NY rent and don't get NY services, neither are people from Chicago, LA, Austin or any other city).
You will never be a world class or even a top US "city" if you don't pull it together. Public transportation, super markets and stores that stay open late enough for people who have working hours, streets safe enough to walk on, competitive market prices for housing, all of these are things real cities work on.
Today a real estate broker tried to tell me I could drive to the market 5 minutes during certain hours if I needed something, that isn't city living, I do that in the suburbs now. City living is walking or biking a few blocks safely to a store to purchase what I need at any time of the day. Detroit, take a look at your friends Chicago, Toronto, they are close, they pulled it off.
Detroit, please don't let me down. I committed to you, please do the same for your people. Pull it together, be the city you have the potential to be and I'll do my best to stop being such a cranky bitch.
